Michael Stanford bred parrots for many years and in his youth worked at Northern Parrots in Ramsbottom. His experience with cage and aviary birds particularly parrots is extensive.

Parrot & Raptor work was the driving force for Michael to develop the exotic side of the practice and in particular create an on site exotic laboratory as he realised immediate, meaningful pathology results were vital if he was to have success treating these birds. He developed the first dedicated parrot ward with positive pressure ventilation to prevent cross infection of diseases.

Michael work with Grey parrots at Beck's Bird Barn is internationally known and confirmed that parrots are healthier maintained on a formulated diet rather than traditional seed mixes. He also produced the seminal work demonstrating the requirement for UV-b radiation in this species for which he was awarded the prestigious William Hunting Award by the British Veterinary Association. Practice staff have contributed to numerous chapters in veterinary text books relating to cage and aviary birds including the BSAVA manuals.
